On 8 March, International Women’s Day is celebrated. On this occasion, we call for real and effective equality for women which, although it is work that should be carried out every day of the year, becomes especially visible on this date through different events organised by various institutions and by the many women and men who fight to achieve this right, with the aim of putting an end to gender-based violence, the glass ceiling, the gender pay gap and the double working days that women experience in all spheres of life.
This year we want to highlight the double working day experienced by many working women who, in many cases, take on household chores, the upbringing and care of their sons and daughters and, in addition, work outside the home, contributing income to cover the different expenses of the family economy.
Although various work–life balance measures are being adopted, most of them requested by women, the truth is that there still seems to be a long way to go.
Thus, the possibility of reducing working hours in order to care for sons or daughters up to 12 years of age, or for persons with disabilities who are not engaged in paid work, entails the corresponding reduction in salary. Although the contribution base is maintained at 100 % during the first two years, thereafter contributions are calculated on the basis of the salary actually received. Therefore, if the reduced working hours are maintained for more than two years, social security contributions will be based on that lower salary, which may result in a lower retirement pension. Bearing in mind that this right is mainly used by women, who in many cases also earn lower wages than many men, the result is that women’s retirement pensions may be significantly lower than those of men.
Furthermore, as a noteworthy development, workers may now request adjustments to the length and distribution of their working day, the organisation of working time and the way in which work is performed, including remote work, in order to make their right to a work–life balance effective. Where they have sons or daughters, workers are entitled to make such a request until their children turn 12 years of age.
In the Concello de Zas (Zas Town Council) there is a Women’s Information Centre (CIM) as a tool to provide advice on equality issues. It is staffed by professionals specialising in equal opportunities and gender-based violence and one of its functions, among others, is to provide women with legal and employment advice.
