Among the number of trails and unique places to visit on the Costa da Morte, we chose a small route that connects the oak grove of Baio with the Pedra Vixía.
The route begins in Baio. To get to the oak tree, you have to go to the post office located in the center of the town. From there, and oriented towards the river, you have to take a detour located on the left.
Following this path, you reach a fork with a small children’s playground. We have to turn to the left again. After walking for a while along a dirt path, it is now possible to divide the oak tree. Access to this property must be done on foot, as there is a small gate at its entrance.
This forest of centuries-old oaks is an example of Galicia’s own woodland. This oak forest is so old that its trees have their stems turned upside down, which gives a mysterious air to the place.
The route continues along the banks of the Rio Grande – which we must leave on our right hand. Along the bed there are numerous stone remnants where you can stop and enjoy the charm of the area. Following this path, we will find a road that leads to the secondary school of the town. When you reach the high school, you have to follow a stretch of asphalt road that leads to the football field. In the vicinity, and integrated into the river, there is an old mill that is still in operation.
Continuing along the asphalt track, you reach the regional road that connects Baio and Zas. Turn right and cross the Rio Grande. Once you have passed the concessionaire, you have to get into the first lane on the right, at the height of the pedestrian crossing.
Here we arrive at the recreational area of Pedra Vixía, which occupies the site of an old sawmill from the 50s.
The last stretch of this route runs along the left bank of the river. Following a narrow path, we will come to a stone dam that causes a waterfall. We cross the wooden pass and continuing straight along fishermen’s paths we have to pass through several mills until we reach the stone remains that form the dolmen – barely recognizable – of A Pedra Vixía.
From here you have to take the road back to the Baio-Zas district to reach the starting point.
