With an elongated rectangular plan, this palace has a lateral extension in the form of a low body that breaks its original symmetry. It has a glazed gallery and a balcony that add architectural appeal. On its façade there is a coat of arms with the arms of families such as the Figueroa, Leis and Caamaño, testimony to the importance of these lineages in local history.

Domingo Fontán and the Pazo de Follente

Domingo Fontán, known for being the author of the first Geometric Map of Galicia, maintained a close relationship with the Pazo de Follente. Fontán’s relatives resided in the Pazo de Follente, which made the illustrious mathematician and engineer visit this enclave frequently. In addition to being a family meeting space, the palace became a place for study, reflection and work, providing the advances in the complex measurements and calculations that shaped his Geometric Chart.

The presence of Fontán in Follente is part of the historical memory of the place and adds value to its heritage, strengthening the link between the pazo and one of the most prominent figures in Galician science and cartography.

Sign of Not Visitable

The Pazo de Follente is one of the heritage jewels of the City Council of Zas, located just 2 kilometers from the municipal center. It is a rectangular construction that retains the elegance of Galician stately architecture. On its façade stands out a beautiful iron balcony on which the coats of arms of the main lineages linked to this place are proudly displayed: the Figueiroa, represented with five fig leaves; The Laws, with a pine tree and an arm raising a sword. And the Caamaño, with a pine tree accompanied by nine spears. These heraldic symbols constitute an authentic stone account of the family and social history of the region.

This palace stands out not only for its architectural value, but also for its historical and cultural importance. Here the geographer Domingo Fontán began his journey to elaborate the Geometric Map of Galicia, the first scientific map of the country, a monumental work that marked a before and after in Galician geography and cartography. Next to the pazo is the old church of San Pedro de Follente, which was a parish until 1870, forming a historical complex of great interest.

Access is simple: you have to take the AC-404 road in the direction of Santiago and, at kilometer 88, take a detour on the left in the direction of Rosende. About 500 meters away, on the right, stands the palace, which surprises for its discreet monumentality and the silence of its rural environment.
