Rio Grande Trail

The Rio Grande is a source of life and a natural axis that unites municipalities and landscapes.

Máis información sobre Rio Grande Trail

The Rio Grande rises from the junction of the Mira and Sixto streams near Pazos, and when it joins the Zas River it forms a fluvial artery that runs through soft lands and wide valleys until it flows into the Camariñas estuary. Along its 22 km, it crosses municipalities such as Coristanco, Zas, Laxe or Vimianzo, leaving an essential mark on the landscape and on the lives of the people.

The riparian forest that accompanies it is a true refuge of biodiversity. Alis, oaks, birches and willows make up an ecosystem that protects the margins and hosts numerous species of fauna such as the Iberian frog, the mallard or the trout.

On its banks there are also rocky outcrops and, above all, ethnographic elements of great interest such as the mills, which for centuries have taken advantage of the force of water to grind grain or even generate energy. These are joined by batanes, hydraulic machines that were used to compact fabrics and that are part of the traditional industrial memory.

To carry out this trail is to immerse yourself in a route that combines nature, ethnography and history, showing how the Rio Grande has become a symbol of identity for the entire Land of Soneira.
