Brandomil: a commitment to heritage
Brandomil is today one of the symbols of the Municipality of Zas: a unique Roman enclave on the banks of the Xallas River, with its historic bridge, the ancient town and road, and a natural environment that attracts more and more visitors. In recent years, the City Council of Zas has invested more than €100,000 in environmental recovery works, enhancement and improvement of access to the site, to ensure that this archaeological heritage is preserved and at the same time open to the neighborhood and cultural tourism.

The big bets of the City Council of Zas in Brandomil
The municipal action in Brandomil is organized around three main axes: the archaeological research of the Roman past, the recovery of the landscape and the river area around the bridge and, finally, the dissemination of this legacy through routes, guided tours and projects linked to the pilgrimage routes to Muxía and Santiago.
Research and Protection of the Roman Brandomil
The City Council of Zas maintains a stable agreement with the Brandomil Foundation to support the excavation and consolidation campaigns of the town and the Roman road, providing economic resources and coordination with the General Directorate of Heritage. Thanks to this commitment, new finds continue to appear in the area of Pedra do Altar and its surroundings, positioning Brandomil as a reference of the archaeological heritage in Galicia.
Regeneration of the environment of the bridge and the river beach
The environmental regeneration of the area near the bridge includes the removal of tons of earth accumulated by the floods, the recovery of the river beach, the improvement of accesses and leisure spaces and the general cleaning of the banks of the Xallas. These actions have transformed the environment into a safer, more attractive and accessible space for walking, bathing and observing the landscape.
Dissemination, guided tours and Jacobean routes
Every summer, the City Council of Zas, together with the Brandomil Foundation, organizes a program of free guided tours to raise awareness of the Roman and medieval history of Brandomil, as well as its relationship with the routes to Muxía. In addition, it promotes hiking routes and itineraries linked to the Camino a Muxía from Brandomil, integrating the enclave into the new proposals for pilgrimage and sustainable tourism of the Costa da Morte.
